Just minutes ago, I was channel surfing past MTV2, and they were showing a video for a song called 'Girlfriend' (cover of an old 60's tune, I think), using clips from some anime I didn't recognize offhand. (Looked sci-fi, and the art style was kind of like MSG. The hero had blond hair, a red shirt, and a cigar, while the heroine had long light blue hair, opaque sunglasses, and lips like Mick Jagger.)

This is the first example I know of of a con-style AMV getting playtime on a music video network. ^_^

That video's been on for years. I remember watching that when I was 14 or 15. Can't remember the name of the guy who did it though. At any rate I think the anime is mentioned in some faq somewhere.

The musician is Matthew Sweet, the music is 'Girlfriend', and I THINK the anime is Crusher Joe.

No, blond hair, red shirt and a cigar (and a girl with lips like Mick Jagger) sounds like Space Pirate Cobra to me.

Actually, I just googled on Space Pirate Cobra and found a review of it that mentions Sweet's video. It's Cobra.

Of the TWO Matthew Sweet anime videos from the early 90's, this would be the 'Space Adventurer: Cobra' one. (They don't show the Lum one as much anymore.)

Yes, this would've been back in the late 80's, when Sweet was convinced he was the only one who had ever HEARD of Lum

Crap, you're right. For some reason, that one got mixed up in my head. :grunt: Probably because I hadn't really liked either one.

Urusei Yatsura (just called Yatsura in North America), from Scotland, most notable for the song 'Plastic Ashtray.' I think they've split up now.

Either that, or at point were forced to change their name for, erm, obvious reasons.

Derek Janssen (yes, back then it was hard to believe this was really all corporate stuff that people actually OWNED, wasn't it?)
