I was going to go visit my sister for the holidays and bring my Sailor Moon S DVD's (from Pioneer) to show her but she has already seen the North American broadcast version on TV. Is there any point now? More specifically, were there any significant edits between the two? What were they? Thanks...

Might want to show her the *subtitled* version of the episode where Lita/Mako wants Amara/Haruka to be her 'best friend'...

Depends on your definition of 'significant.' I'd say no, but the people over at alt.fan.sailor-moon would disagree. Ask there for the litany.

It was lightly-edited on CN; stuff was cut for time, religious refrences removed, some nudity digitally painted over, some lesbian undertones edited. It was however, MUCH less edited than DiC's dubs of the first 2 TV series and much more faithful to the Japanese version. The music in the dubs of S and Super S is exactly the same as in the Japanese versions. I would recommend the subtitled version, as the dialouge in both the uncut and edited dubs is heavily-toned down regarding Uranus and Neptune's relationship.

relationship.

Yeah, I did notice that the religious references were edited out of the Pioneer dub. What's up with that? I mean, did they really think they would offend us by leaving that stuff in? Is anyone here offended by the subtitles? Yeah, it's hard to be more subtitled than the DiC Sailor Moon episodes (although I've heard that there are some series that are!). Unfortunately, I can't get my youngest sister to watch subtitled anime. She prefers it _dubbed._ Fortunately, my older sister (not older than myself) _does_ prefer her anime subtitled (or, at least, hasn't complained to be about it).

Just tell your youngest sister two of the sailor scouts act like lesbians in the subbed version. Maybe that will change her mind.

Just Another Victim of the Ambient Morality ha escrito:

It make me laugh when Rei's grandfather showed up when Usagi and Ami visited the Hikawa shrine, and since they were cute, he offered them work at the shrine, at which Usagi declined since she didn't know how to pray 'Our Father' (a christian pray), and he very angry replied that this was not that kind of place.

And I saw this in Mexico, where more than 90% of the population have Christian-catholic as religion.

It's not Pioneer's dub, it's Cloverway's dub

Take em, if only for the novelty of hearing the original voices...Not really relevant, but something interesting I noted: When watching CN's version, I popped in a fansubbed tape and alternated watching both (with the fansub a few seconds ahead) to see how close the two were. They were surprisingly similar, though one scene, where Sailor Mercury is lost and searching for the others, had this bit of dialouge (from memory):

Subbed: 'Minna? Doco?' ('Everyone? Where are you?' Dubbed: 'Mina? Where are you?'

*shrug* That's what you get when you have a character with a name that close to a commonplace word.
