I hope last night's International Channel showing of El Hazard wasn't sign of a new trend - they skipped the opening credits and the intro, and the show was over in 18 minutes flat! More space for advertising I guess.

If it's 18 min long, it's wanderers. Now, Wanderers was released on VHS with ending and closing credits excised from intermediate episodes; don't know about the DVD.

Either way, the second OP and the ED for wanderers are both pretty crappy. The first OP is not bad, though.

Pardon my ignorance, but can you explain the difference/relationship between El Hazard and Wanderers? Seems to me IC was showing El Hazard, then it looked like they started over, but things I thought should be there weren't. So there are actually two different series?

The different El Hazard continuities are (basically) as follows:

The El Hazard: The Magnificent World OAV's, (7 OAV's), EH:TMW 2 (4 OAV's) and EH: The Alternative World (12-13 episodes) are the first sequence.

EH: The Wanderers (26 TV episodes) are another sequence.

The EH Manga release is a separate continuity as well.

This breakup is based on their internals. Certain characters exist in one continuity and not others, characters change (sometimes massively) between continuities as well.

The first 7 OAV's introduce most of our major characters: Makoto, Nanami, Fujisawa-sensei, Jinnai, the Priestesses of Mount Muldoon, Rune Venus, Alielle and Galus and the Phantom Tribe... and, of course, Ifurita. The 4 OAV's of EH2 introduce Ifurita II and Kalia. The Alternative World introduces Qawoor and Alielle's brother.

The Wanderers uses most of the same characters, but some plot considerations are extremely differtent. Rune Venus becomes a teenager and Fatora doesn't exist. Ifurita is changed beyond recognition. Even Queen Diva of the Bugrom loses both age and intelligence.

The Manga is a hybrid of both the other continuitites. Rune remains a teen-ager, fatora's still missing, the Phantom Tribe are back and there's two entirely new Demon Gods.

Most fans who ran across them in the order they were released here in the US prefer the first continuity, from what I can see.

Yup. In fact, there are a total of four different EH anime series, two OVA and two TV. Wanderers [EH: Wanderers, in full] is the first TV series, and in a seperate continuity from the other three series [which share continuity].

Being a seperate continuity, it starts the story over, but different. There are some *major* differences between OVA and TV continuity, but most of them would be spoilers [for the OVA; spoiling Wanderers does not worry me in the slightest].

It's also perilously close to 'unwatchable crap', for those of us over the age of about ten, and strictly for completists, or for those with absolutely *nothing* to do. Really. Read a book instead.

<snip>

Talking about Wanderers:

Even given that, it's still head and shoulders above 75% of North American television. Depressing, isn't it?

As per usual in the Tenchistyle-verses, IIRC, there's two (three?) main continuities: An OAV and its continuation, and a TV series. Main difference is a different 'Ifurita' in the TV series (looks VERY different than the original lavender-haired on) and Makoto's mostly lovin' with Rune Venus.

One bonus of the non-OAVs is having a more sedate (or just less bitchy)

Perhaps; I'll be in the states for my sister's wedding later in the year, so I'll see just how bad your TV programming is...
