While mysteries still abound we learn a lot about the world of the Haibane in this episode.

All of the Haibane live collectively in an abandoned school dorm.

The town is populated by non-Haibane. To all outward appearances they are normal human beings. They accept, or at least tolerate, the presence of the Haibane.

The Haibane are only permitted the possession and use of things humans no longer want or need. They are forbidden the possession or use of anything new. They are not permitted the possession or use of money. All transactions are conducted through signed pages of a handbook they receive from the Haibane Renmei. Since Rakka doesn't have such a handbook yet she used a feather from her wing to pay for her dress.

The Haibane are protected by an organization called the Haibane Renmei (Charcoal Feather Federation). This organization provides for their basic needs and living expenses. As to what they need protection from is one of those mysteries.

The town is isolated by a formidable looking wall that neither human nor Haibane may pass beyond. Only the Toga, special members of the Haibane Renmei, may go beyond this barrier. The Toga cannot speak to anyone on the town side of the wall and communicate only with a special representative called the Washi and only in sign language.

Two and a half episodes in and I am totally captivated by this show. I am afraid, however, that there might be a serious downside to being a Haibane. This would be a terrible shame as I am becoming very fond of them.
