The movie is an alternate retelling of the TV series. It is not necessary to see the TV series before watching the movie and if you do see the TV series you'll see many of the TV characters were reworked for the movie.

Well, I loved the series and hated the movie, so my first instinct is to tell you to watch the TV series first. But... it might actually be better to watch the movie first. That way you don't have the expectations of the TV series upon you when you watch it.
