I loved this episode. If only the first 26 of the series stood on their own like this did. Basically, it's a story about three girls who work as a team to create one 'super character' in the World. Mimiru relates the tale to Bear as they reunite in the World two years after the end of episode 26 (unless I missed a cameo, these are the only two 'regulars'. Perhaps it's due to the fact that they have to tell the entire tale in 20 minutes; but this episode was much tighter, more direct in its mission to get its point across to the viewer. There was the usual chit-chat as in the first 26 episodes; but unlike much of the series, where you felt like you were just listening in on some meaningless conversation, the dialogue here was straight-forward and had purpose. Also, we had more than the normal amount of action sequences, and a definite ending. Maybe the best ep of the series, imo...

My guess is that this isn't part of the CN package? If not, I highly recommend d'ling this episode. Even if you grew tired of the series and gave up on it, this makes a nice standalone episode worthy of your time.

I think it took place 2 years after the 'incident' Mimiru describes to Bear. Notice, the 'little girl' with the heart on her cheek (self-proclaimed 12 years old) in the flashback WAS Mimiru.

I'm hearing there's more?

An additional 30 minute ep entitled evidence, and something else coming out?

'Evidence' is the recap episode we all saw as 'ep 15' while it was being digisubbed back when it was still airing on TV in Japan. (The DVD's didn't count it in the normal ordering of episodes - episode 25 is the last on the 9th DVD.) I heard somewhere people get a special something or whatever if they buy all the PS2 games and send in something in mail... that was just hearsay though, and yes, .hack//Liminality ep 4 still has yet to come out to us.

Once upon a time in the faraway land of rec.arts.anime.misc, D-Chance.

Actually I wasn't very impressed by it for the same reason. I liked the ongoing story and mystery of the series. Without that it's just an ordinary RPG tale. It was OK as an extra, but it doesn't lead anywhere.

This fansub has the smallest subtitles I've ever seen, I definitely recommend digging out your magnifying glass for watching this episode. Also we still have that daft thing that occurred in the main series, of subbers subtitling English lyrics into English! Given that the they weren't subbed in Japanese for the original audience, one has to ask what the point is of bothering to subtitle words whose meaning the producers evidently felt the audience didn't need to understood anyway.

The emphasis on game playing and cute characters made me wonder if this was perhaps intended as a bridging episode, to soften us up for the super-deformed cuteness and action of the follow-up series, Bracelet of the Twilight?
