I am looking for a place where I can get Japanese symbols for words such as 'love', 'hate', 'war', 'peace', etc. For drawings and stories I am working on where I want to use such symbols.

Thanks in advance

here are two pages that might help you a bit: http://www.abuilttolast.com/kanji/peace.html http://japanese.about.com/bl50kanji.htm

Japanese symbols are called kanji, and that's basically japanized chinese characters.. they provide both sound and meaning, unlike the two other japanese scripts.

Anyway, knowing that they are called kanji should help you searhing for more stuff at www.google.com.. or you could try asking in sci.lang.japanese or something if you cannot find it on the web. I would've loved to help you personally but I do not really know any kanji so.. ^_^ another good advice would be, if you have many different words you want to use, to buy an english-to-kanji dictionary or something.

If you don't even know that those 'symbols' are called kanji, then you may want to do quite a bit of cultural research before you use what you find.

The Japanese<->English Dictionary Server at:
http://linear.mv.com/cgi-bin/j-e/dict

If your browser won't handle Kanji it will show the result as a graphic. Simply click on the result that most closely matches your query. Be advised - the word 'love' returned in excess of a hundred matches.

Mm, I don't think that's quite 'hate' in the Western sense. I think I would use 񂿂 or .

Or, if you're looking for alternate words whose characters have the 'duality' aspect of peace and war: Peace - k War -

They aren't symbols. They're words.

If you can't appreciate the difference, I suggest you abandon the project.

If you can't see why it might be regarded as silly to have words you can't actually read in your artworks, I suggest you abandon the project.

This is not me being mean. Mean would be me bouncing the message to sci.lang.japan with an attached note suggesting that you were some sort of otaku looking for a tattoo.

Just remember that if you've ever laughed or made fun of Japanese people for 'engrish', you should understand this
