So I'm downloading stuff sight-unseen, and come across this little gem. The opening credits show a copyright belonging to Sunrise from *1989*???
Wow, this thing held its age very well. I thought this was a fansub, but there were no subtitles. Still, I was impressed by the artwork, especially for a 14-15 year old series. Super background artwork and computer graphics, better than many series being currently produced today. Music was a bit cheesy (ok, it's 'kiddie mecha', so it's understandable); and the character designs were a bit dated. But the voice actors were highly expressive and the pace of the story was lively, especially for a first episode. Cool, Transformer-esque mecha design, a bit of magic (a Star of David in lieu of a Pentagon?). Main character had his own kick-ass rocket powered skateboard, beating those Rocket Power kids on Nickelodion by a decade or so. An old witch, an ultra-cute baby, dancing carrots, magic, mechas... what more could you want in a kiddie mecha program?
How this thing has gone 14 years without a US airing... this was fun anime! The magic stuff might have scared some off, with the few occult symbols; but I've seen much worse filling morning and afternoon airwaves. I soon forgot I was watching it unsubbed and stayed with it all the way through the first episode. It was that entertaining!
