Funnily enough, this solution had occurred to me.
I guess this was what I really wanted to know.

While a lot of anime titles have mecha, the majority do not.
If you like Sci-Fi, but don't like mecha, try:
o 'Crest of the Stars' o 'Cowboy Bebop'. o 'Wings of Honneamise'. (IIRC there's some problem with the mastering of the DVD, so maybe you should rent instead of buying.)
Well then, try:
o 'Spirited Away' - now in limited theatrical release in the US. aka 'Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi'. o 'Shamanic Princess'. o 'Castle of Cagliostro'. o 'Boogiepop Phantom'. o 'InuYasha' - broadcast in the US on Saturdays at 11 PM on Cartoon Network. o 'Tsukigage Ran - Wandering with the Wind' aka 'Kazemakase Tsukigage Ran'. o 'Roujin Z'. o 'Ghost in the Shell'.

Wings of Honneamise and Cowboy Bebop are remarkable works by the standards of any genre, let alone anime. Haven't seen Crest of the Stars but I'll certainly try and check it out. There are some minor problems with the Honneamise DVD but none that really spoil the enjoyment.
Thanks - IIRC you were good enough to make similar recommendations in an earlier thread I posted, but of these Ghost in the Shell and Cagliostro are the only ones I've managed to see in the UK so far. Again, I'm looking forward to the release of Spirited Away over here.
Cheers.

Because mecha and giant robots are cool, man! Start with Gigantor.
Animejump.com has a nice explanation in their articles section.

I know about the AT fields but I didn't know the oversized infantry weapons had anything to do with them (I haven't seen the whole series). Can the Eva somehow project its AT field via the bullets it fires with its guns? It seems kind of odd, since I thought the AT field only surrounded living organisms. The only times I've seen the Eva AT field explicitly being used against an Angel, it was manipulating it directly like a force field to penetrate the Angel's field.
