That's why I buy it used. I buy it at Half Price Books, pawn shops, and the cheaper used titles at Wherehouse Music and Gamestop. I generally pay $8-15 per DVD.
My cheapskatedness overpowers my otakuness.

Looks like Half Price recently got a new load of anime that they're selling for $7/disc! In Austin, they're not even bothering to remove the disc from the case (they probably have a $10 threshold or something like that), and leaving it shrinkwrapped on the shelf. I picked up Arjuna vol 1 and Big O vol 1 yesterday.
And of course they have a ton of VHS anime, much of which is remaindered *sub* tapes from Bandai/AnimeVillage. (Most of their used tapes are dubs, though.)

That's why I download. I refuse to pay these ridiculous prices for *ANYTHING*, especially when most American pro-subbing is so horribly done.
Screw them.

Yes, and before TNG hit the DVD shelves, it had already made money in its first run, in syndication, in global syndication, and in VHS releases.
At best, for the US distributors, anime -might- have had a VHS release and a small TV run. Only recently has syndication become a wide profit source. By and large, the home video market is how the anime industry makes money, while TV shows make their money on TV.

This is true, but I still think they sell way more My So Called Life than Fancy Lala.

Would you be willing to send some money to the company in japan, just to say thank you for doing such a wonderful job?
