...to be a perfectly viewable animation series.

I know it has come under massive criticism on here. But I'll take the minority view in saying that I enjoyed it greatly. Why?

1) It's different. Not just fight fight fight. 2) I love ancient history - Greek, Roman, Indian, etc. So I obviously ate this up. The story was interesting enough that I'd watch it even if I hated the art (I don't). 3) Kick ass soundtrack.

My problem was that Alexander, the Great was too strong. I guess that was only staying true to his real life character, but in terms of making the storyline compelling, there was never anytime when Alexander came across as being in danger, or as the underdog.

That's a rare thing to hear for an anime whose music was redone from the original. O.o

Well, he finally got some action in the last three episodes, saving Alexander's life three different times, at the cost of his own the last time . . .

Funny thing, Alexander's actual death was almost worthy of Peter 'nail-in-the-boot' Chung. He conquers the known world in about 15 years, and dies of yellow fever from a mosquito bite!

Others:

Attila the Hun: Ravages Eastern Europe, brings Rome to its knees . . . dies of a nose bleed! (wedding night; too much wine)

Barbarossa: On way to Crusades, drown in puddle of mud. (armor too heavy)

George S. Patton: Survives gunfight in Mexico (pursuing Pancho Villa), a mustard gas attack in WWI, and leads victory after victory in WWII Europe. Dies from injuries in a car accident where neither vehicle was doing more than 10 MPH. (all other occupants were untouched; he *was* sitting awkwardly)

<snicker> <cough> I'll behave.

Three times...? It seems to me Cleitus had more of a hand in the fight against the Pythagoreans and Cassandra. Besides, that doesn't make up for him being virtually neglected most of the time. Some of the conversations Alex was having with people like Cleitus and Philotus he actually SHOULD have been having with Heph. I mean, how many times do you see them talk to each other? Heph's there, but they don't interact hardly at all. And this was Alex's RL *childhood best friend*, whom he went into deep mourning for... Argh.

Oddly, most of the deaths seemed historically accurate

And absolutely true, and possibly one of the weird 'want of nail' turning points in history; Barbarossa was leading the largest contingent heading for the Third Crusade. When he died, they turned around and went home. The crusade (and by extension, the crusades) might have been successful if he'd gotten there.

The boobs/nudity

Excessive blood

Snake priestess erotica

Also, I bet some of the Greek philosiphy was toned down, though I did not get a chance to watch it that closely. I was visiting my Dad and my half- brothers were dragging me away from the TV to play counterstrike and help with flash animations.

I do NOT regret buying the DVD though!
