Unneccesary characters?

I was just thinking of how winston zeddmores character in 'ghostbusters' wasnt really needed (he didnt do anything memorable, half the time he wasnt even on camera), so it got me to thinking about unneeded characters in anime. First thing that comes to mind are oolong, puar, and ox king. Ok, they served their purpose in DB, but by dbz they were just unneccesary background stuff who didnt deserve animation wasted on them. Can anyone think of any other unneccesary

Only ones that come to mind at the moment (long day, and all that) are the two waitresses (Jirayu and Mayu?) from the Sky Temple restaurant in Kimi ga Nozomu Eien. They were great for the necessary comic relief in this series, and in showing that Narumi had an environment he could be relaxed in. But I wish that they could have stretched out the series by an extra episode or two, to flesh out their backstories, a few hardships that they have to face, and their resolution to it. As it stands, they seem like last minute additions to the series, despite being in the game that the series is based on.

Btw, I'd also list Jirayu (or whoever it was who kept shouting 'Go step in catsh!t' in the 'Most fiery temper?' thread, if I had remembered.

I don't class them as unnecessary; they're necessary to show continuity and background as stable, which for a living world is a true necessity.

That would be Mihoshi. Served no purpose on introduction, serves no purpose that could not have been better served by either a completely different character or even one of the other characters.

Umm,,how WAS washu introduced in the OVA again? Oh yeah,,thanks to Mihoshi! If not for her, she never would have gotten out of that chamber she was locked in.

As I said, no purpose that could not have been served by either a completely different character or even one of the other characters. I could rewrite that sequence very easily. There is no requirement that a blond bimbo with an IQ near that of C-Ko's perform the release.

This was around the late-80's time that Golan/Globus wanted a piece of the A-picture pie (this was back when they had 'art' aspirations and wanted to spend their Charles Bronson and Chuck Norris profits on subsidizing 'Powaqqatsi'
