Miramax is releasing an English dub of a new Italian film based on Pinocchio, starring Roberto Bennini.

In order to compete with Disney, Warner Bros. releases the 70's Tatsunoko anime version of Pinocchio on DVD. It just goes to show how US companies are chosing to market an anime version of a product instead of making their own crappy-animated video-movies. It's cheaper too.

This movie looks like the worst thing ever. I have seen better lip synching on a Godzilla movie.

This would probably be okay.

Which, incidentally, is *live action*, not animated.

We have good animation. It's just that the big guys have lost their way.

'Tales of Phantasia' on HBO(Based off of the 'Neverending Story' novel) 'Tales from the Book of Virtues' on PBS.

Sure they were morality tales, but they did a good job and the main characters did

My grandmother used to always recieve tapes of 'Adventures From the Book of Virtues' in the mail, from Reader's Digest I believe. I think I have at least five tapes now (maybe more) and I've watched them all. Yes, it IS a great cartoon. Being based on classic literature really helps.

The problem with American Animation is that, unlike Japanese animation, American stuff is almost entirely designed to sell, except for works specific to a certain network which is usually a pet project, and usually ends up overlooked in favor of more high-end bargains. 'Fox's Peter Pan and the Pirates' for instance. One of the best cartoons I've seen, but whenever it DOES play, it's filler.

Japanese animation and comics are actually much more commercial than American animation and comics in many ways. Look at the sheer level of merchandise that exists for practically every series. I can't think of any American animation, including Disney films, that have the sheer level of merchandise that any single anime series has.

except for works specific to a certain

I think the real limitation to American animation is the expectation that it must be firendly to all ages.

I can believe you there.

That's the real driving force in marketing animation in the states. We tend to still think anything animated has to be that way rather than marketing it to one particular demographic and just stick to the whole kid-friendly level all the way.

Thank God I didn't have the intentions to see it (would rather probably wait till it's on DVD and watch it in Italian if possible).

Heh, I'd rather see most of Tatsunoko's 70's library of toons released by WB personally, especially Time Bokan, Yattaman, and all those other cooky, crazy and amusing titles.

Howdy!

<nod> I was at the local comics emporium a few weeks ago (been there since, but this story happened then) and I happened to notice 'Gunsmith Cats Action Figures'.

I said to myself, 'Bless my stars and garters!' since I hadn't seen any before.

BTW - They got Minnie May wrong - she's fairly chesty in the action figure. But it's not THAT action figure ... <grins>
