hi,

please suggest next anime in the genre of space or one that would be similar to PLANETES. Enjoyed this series because it paid attention to realism & was very well drawn. It also had a interesting story.

I'm going to take every opportunity to mention Futsari no spica (spelling?) 'Twin Spica', even though it doesn't fit your criteria.

(spelling?)

_Futatsu_ no Spica. And you're right - it only shares the theme of space very loosely with Planetes, is very unrealistic and has terrible animation. However, it's quite well scripted, although slightly melodramatic and contrived.

Planetes has been compared to Patlabor TV series, although it is very different from the Patlabor movies.

If you haven't seen Crest of the Stars and its sequels, that's an absolute must.

Hot Table?

No, I'm kidding.

The melodrama *every* episode is a bit tiresome.

The only one I can think of that even remotely comes close to your requirements would be Zone of the Enders: Dolores, or possibly the other ZoE series, but Dolores is the only full-length TV series I believe. But even then I'm kind of embarrased mentioning it, as it is only alike to PLANETES in a close-future, inter- solar system civilization and space-flight. Frankly, I can't think of anything like PLANETES.

Anyone who compares shows like Crest of the Stars with PLANETES is clearly off their rocker. You might as well suggest Dirty Pair or Kiddy Grade.

Similarity is relative. Crest of the Stars and PLANETES are *quite* similar by all the criteria the original poster mentioned explicitly (interesting, well drawn, realism).

Why hasn't anyone suggested the obvious? Wings of Honneamise?

...except that there is no space-flight whatsoever.

Still a good movie.

Incorrect.

There was an attempt at a hard-SF anime OAV series that focused on cislunar space activities with an effort towards realism, good art, and good storylines... 'Mighty Space Miners'

Alas, it arrived too early for its genre (1994), and died before the series could be completed. ADV has what was released (as incomplete as it is)

Which answers the original question, in a way... something like Planetes could not have been successful much earlier than the current date.
