Whats the story on acquiring this series?

Hana yori Dango is an interesting and very good series with legions of fans on both sides of the Pacific eager to get their hands on it. Yet other than rental VHS tapes the series does not seem to have been released in any purchaseable form, particularly DVD.

I have a distant memory of reading that HYD was in some sort of licensing limbo that made acquisition for North American distribution virtually impossible until such time as the issues surrounding it can be resolved. However I have no details.

So is anyone familiar with the situation surrounding Hana yori Dango? Is it trapped in some sort of licensing hell or is it simply that no company is interested in it?

True. But Funimation picked up Fruits Basket which is viciously shoujo and reportedly it's selling very well for them. Since HYD is about the most famous shoujo show out there I would figure someone would be interested in snagging it.

Yeah, but it has transforming animals in it!!! Animals! And transformers!!! *shakes fist* Where's Ethan?!?!!!!

My point is, such hijinks break the pure shoujo-ness to make it more digestible/acceptable to more people, not unlike 'Death by Chocolate' dessert from Olive Garden. *yum*

Most famous?! HA! Despite the efforts of Tomodachi and Technogirls back then, I guess it's way too real and not enough hijinks nor fantasy worlds to hook but the most hardcore shoujo-ites. Kinda like mid-afternoon soap opera to most TV drama watchers; very much an acquired taste. IMHO. An example title that's even more in the deep end is My Dear Brother.

My memory stands corrected, the boy that dressed like a girl (the one mentioned above) and the hyper-'pig' girl, were both amusing, but still only supporting/incidental characters in the story.

What? And the little group of girls who worship Yuki aren't funny? And Shigeru in generally isn't funny? Or Kyo just generally being psycho isn't funny? and and and....
