I've noticed that the DVDs of some anime series actually have substantially worse sound quality than the old VHS fansubs of those series. Does anyone know why this is? Two examples are Sailor Moon and To Heart. In both cases the fansubs have a 44.1 KHz audio track whose frequency response goes up to about 20KHz, whereas the DVDs have 48KHz audio track whose frequency response is only around 8-12 KHz, suggesting that they are based on a master tape which used 16 or 24KHz sampling.

The fansubs of both series (Arctic and Sachi respectively) seem to have been derived from off-air broadcasts; it seems surprising that the DVDs are apparently derived from a source which is actually inferior to a domestic VHS recording!

Especially considering the original poster is (probably) in the UK, which means the licencing matter is different anyway...

Once upon a time in the faraway land of rec.arts.anime.misc, Daisy

People with deep pockets can find details of the To Heart DVDs and other items here: http://www.aquaplus.co.jp/th/th_anime.html At two episodes per disk, it works out Y2800 / £ 15 per episode (I'm not sure what that is in dollars). Just add your favourite fansub script and away you go!

TH Manga etc is at: http://www.aquaplus.co.jp/th/th_books.html there's some very cute looking stuff there, but due to the use of rollover gifs the page takes a while to load.
